Overview
2021–2022

The ongoing conflict in northeastern Nigeria caused by the Boko Haram insurgency has led to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, resulting in mass displacement, disruption of basic services, and increased protection risks. The Empowered Choices project reaches 10–19-year-old internally displaced persons (IDPs) in one of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria’s IDP settlements. Empowered Choices seeks to improve adolescent health and well-being and advance gender equality by giving adolescent girls the skills to make healthy transitions to adulthood.

Project Activities

  • Undertook a peer mentorship program where peer educators increased knowledge about SRHR, thereby improving the health and well-being of adolescents.
  • Hosted skills-acquisition sessions to enhance the economic empowerment of adolescents
  • Engaged community gatekeepers and caregivers to address norms and attitudes that propagated gender inequities.
  • Worked with households and communities to address barriers that prevented adolescents from accessing SRHR services and exercising their rights.
  • Set up protection mechanisms and safe spaces for adolescents.
  • Improved capacity of facility-based providers to offer adolescent-friendly services at select health facilities.
  • Facilitated the referral of adolescents to health facilities for care.
