Responding to COVID-19 in Hotspot Areas of Ethiopia

Funder

USAID/OFDA

Overview
2020–2021

The project supports Regional Health Bureaus in Ethiopia to ensure the primary health care system is resilient and can provide essential health services while responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recognizing COVID-19’s potential disruption to delivery of essential health care, Pathfinder supports the primary health care system in Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, and SNNP regions to respond to emerging service delivery needs. This project builds on the ongoing efforts of Pathfinder’s USAID Transform: Primary Health Care program to strengthen Ethiopia’s health system and respond to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Project Activities

  • Infection Prevention and Control (IPC): Equip health facilities to provide essential services while adhering to IPC measures
  • Clinical Case Management: Train health workers on COVID-19 case management and IPC using national COVID-19 guidelines in Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, and SNNP regions
  • Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE): Strengthen RCCE by adapting/developing and disseminating RCEE materials, including COVID-19 and/or essential health services guidelines and protocols. Support RCCE through mass media and social media channels including TV transmission, radio spots, live panel discussions, mobile vans, and SMS messaging
  • Disease Surveillance: In prioritized hotspot woredas and towns in Amhara and Tigray regions, train and support health workers and Health Extension Workers in contact tracing, active case identification, RCCE, and IPC
