The AmplifyPF Project in Côte d’Ivoire: Raising Awareness of Reproductive Health/Family Planning Among Deaf Youths and Adolescents in Abobo

People with disabilities, including people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, often face limited access to health services, particularly sexual and reproductive health services. This is, in part, due to the fact that health care staff are generally unfamiliar with sign language, and there are no facilities in health centers for addressing this problem.

As part of the AmplifyFP project funded by USAID and implemented by Pathfinder, the RH/FP Young Champions initiative identified and trained two young people from the Abobo commune as sign language interpreters. Thanks to these young sign language interpreters and young RH/FP champions, access to RH/FP services has increased for young deaf people in Abobo, Côte d’Ivoire. According to their association, there are around 110,000 people who could benefit from sign language interpretation when seeking RH/FP care.

Excellent results have been achieved through awareness-raising sessions. Join the Côte d’Ivoire webinar to share best practices in this approach.
